One topic that keeps coming up over and over are sales funnels and customer journeys. Only, no one ever uses those words! Instead they say things like…

  • “I don’t know where to find new clients.”

  • “My list isn’t growing.”

  • “People like my stuff but never buy.”

  • “People download the lead magnet but then disappear.”

  • “People say they’re interested but ghost me.”

  • “I feel like I’m talking to a wall.”

  • “I don’t want to be annoying.”

  • “Everyone just wants free advice.”

  • “I hate selling.” or "I hate marketing."

  • “My discovery calls go well but don’t close.”

  • “I’m doing so many things but nothing’s working.”

  • "I'm overwhelmed."

  • "I don't know where to start."

  • “I’m tired of reinventing the wheel every time.”

  • “It’s too much to keep up with.”

  • “I don’t have time for marketing.”

Any of that sound familiar to you? It all points to a problem with your sales funnel.

I think the reason people don't just come to me and say, "How do I build a good sales funnel?" is because they have no idea what one is. In fact, I recently put this to the test and asked a few business owners what their sales funnel looked like. Do you want to know what they said?

One person started telling me about their 3 tier good-better-best offer. I'm thrilled they have this 3 tiered system, but that is not a sales funnel - that is what they sell - not how they sell it.

Another person started telling me about their website. I'm glad they have a website and a website can be part of a sales funnel and customer journey, but it is generally not the entire process from discovery that you exist to purchase, especially in today's world of crappy search engine results.

So let's clear the air shall we?

A Sales Funnel is the experience of a potential customer who discovers that you exist (top of funnel); comes to know, like and trust you to solve their problem (middle of funnel); and makes a purchase (bottom of funnel).

A Customer Journey is how that experience unfolds. It is the step-by-step journey that customer takes. It spells out how your sales funnel works and what you do to make it work.

The graphic of a Sales Funnel is a mysterious black box when you look at it from the outside, much like a clock. You can see it working but you have no idea how those tiny hands move. When you crack it open to see all the moving gears inside, that is the Customer Journey.

Most businesses have a Customer Journey that is more like a game of Chutes and Ladders than a game of Candy Land. This confusion can cost you big time!
