Opening Designs in a New Tab, By Default, in Canva
Today, Canva very kindly sent me an email informing me that my development request for design opening behavior has been granted. Having software development requests heard and acted on feels sort of like a genie granting a wish, to be honest.
If you’re anything like me and eat, sleep and breath in Canva, you probably have it open in a half dozen tabs. For those who can’t fathom why I might do this, generally it has to do with creating graphics for the same piece of content in a variety of sizes and shapes for various purposes. Or, I’m creating multiple digital products for my online store and as free gifts for my subscribers and to ensure they all coordinate together properly, I’ll bounce back and forth between several.
Well, a few months ago, they made a change and my designs were no longer immediately opening in a separate browser tab and instead opening this semi-functional preview screen:
Maybe some of you love this view, but personally, I think it’s a pointless annoyance and forces me to click extra times before I do the thing I set out to do.
Now there has been a work around to this. If you click the … button in the upper right corner of your design, you can then select “Open in new tab”, but that is still 2 clicks just to open a design. Those clicks add up and my wrists and fingers aren’t getting any younger.

But every now and then, it turns out that magic is real and wishes really do come true. Even if they’re small ones.
You can now opt to have your designs open in a new tab, by default!
(or not - you have choices!)
You can now set your own preference on opening designs-- either have them open in the same tab or in a new one.
Here’s how to set this feature:
1. Go to your Account Settings
2. Scroll down until you see “Link Opening”
3. Toggle the “Open designs in a new tab” option
Please note that this setting is only available on web browsers.
