Overwhelmed Already? Holiday Season Tips for Entrepreneurs
Overwhelm. It's been a theme this week and considering we're just headed into the holiday season, I'm sure we can expect more. As business owners, it's inevitable. At some point, we will feel overwhelmed.
I suppose one of my more unhealthy coping mechanisms is to procrastinate on all the important stuff that needs to be done, I don't want to do and I feel overwhelmed trying to do. And do you know what happens when I do that? I waste time and energy thinking about all the things I don't want to do, things pile up, and then I feel more overwhelmed. Obviously, that's a lesson in what not to do. Anyone else struggle with this?
So what should we do about it?
Here are a few suggestions:
Is it really necessary? Evaluate whether or not these dreaded tasks are absolutely necessary to the survival and growth of your business. If they're not, toss them.
Delegate/Ask for Help. That's right. I went there second! You own the business. If you can hand it off to an employee or outsource it to someone with expertise, do it! It's not a cop out. You're not being lazy. And you're not wasting money. You have a zone of genius. A set of things you excel at. Spend as much time as possible on those things and hire other people to do the rest. Your business will be all the better for it.
Take a break. I know I just said 'don't procrastinate,' but there is also a time and a place to take a break, decompress, and refresh. Then dive back into the fray. Sometimes the best thing we can do is nothing.
Plan. Sit down and plan your week. Assign yourself one small, undesirable task each day. If you just start picking away at things. You'll make progress and some progress is better than no progress.
Body Double. Sometimes doing things you don't want to do with a buddy makes them a little easier to get done. So leave your office and sit with your staff for company. If you work alone, find another entrepreneur and get on a Zoom call for a working session. Or take your laptop and go sit in a Starbucks.
Overwhelm may be part of the journey, but it doesn’t have to derail us. By evaluating what's truly necessary, delegating, taking strategic breaks, planning, and leaning on others for support, we can transform those moments of feeling stuck into manageable steps forward. Remember, it’s not about doing everything perfectly—it's about finding the right approach that keeps you moving. So as we head into the holiday season, let’s be intentional about how we tackle overwhelm, and give ourselves grace along the way. You've got this, and there's always a way through. If you need help, just hit reply.
Hiring Tech That Might Backfire
In other news…
LinkedIn has launched Hiring Assistant, an AI-powered agent built to take on a number of tasks involved in employee recruitment. I'm sure this will be helpful for some businesses, including freelance head hunters. It will probably be bad for in-house recruiters. And I'm almost certain will be bad for job hunters who are already struggling to get hired because of all the ghost job postings that no one intends to fill, automated resume scanners that deny you if you don't have some unknown list of keywords in the document, and the unrealistic expectation from employers that they customize their application, resume and cover letter for every job they apply to. So if you're having trouble hiring - take a close look at your process and how much tech stands between you and the people you want to hire.

Question: When is the right time to work with a business coach?
Answer:
It's never too early. Before you start the business is an excellent time.
However, it can be too late (when a business is failing). I've brought a lot of businesses back from the brink - but the longer you put off getting help, the harder, more expensive, and less likely to succeed it will be.
Stay Magical,
