Canva Really Does Listen to User Feedback
I received an email from Canva today. No, not a marketing email. A follow up to a suggestion I sent them a couple of months ago.
It reads:
You can now opt to have your designs open in a new tab
Hi there,
You shared some feedback with us about designs no longer opening in a new tab by default. We wanted to let you know that we heard your feedback, and you can now set your own preference on opening designs-- either have them open in the same tab or in a new one.
Please note that this setting is only available on web browsers.
Here’s how to set this feature:
1. Go to your Account Settings
2. Scroll down until you see “Link Opening”
3. Toggle the “Open designs in a new tab” option
Thanks again for sharing your feedback with us. It helps improve Canva for our whole community.
Happy designing!
The Canva Team
And this is not the first email like this that I’ve recevied.
If you provide them with specific, helpful suggestions and feedback, they will take it under consideration. But, you need to be patient. In the world of software development, there is a process that is followed and while bug fixes are prioritized, new features and improvements can take some time.

How Do You Provide Canva with Feedback?
Option 1: Suggesting Improvements From Inside a Canva Design
So where is this secret line direct to the Canva development team? I’ll show you.
If you are in a Canva Design, Go to File > “Suggest an Improvement”
You’ll see a pop up that allows you choose if you are reporting an Improvement or a “Bug” (remember a bug is something that should be working but is not - not just something that you wish worked differently, and certainly not a new feature.)
Reporting Improvements to Canva from Within the Design
To report an improvement from within your Canva design, you’ll navigate to File > Suggest an Improvement > Click “Help Us Improve Canva” from the pop-up screen.
When reporting an improvement, you’ll see a text field that allows you to describe your request. Be as specific as possible - what should it do, what options should be available, where should the feature be accessed from (upper toolbar, left control panel, etc.)
You can also provide a video or still image screen capture to help explain what you are suggesting. I highly recommend you include this! This could be a screen capture of Canva showing where the tool should be access from or what the end result of the design would like. If it is a feature you enjoy in another software app, then provide a screenshot of that app.
When you’re done, click Submit and voila! you’ve provided Canva with your suggestion.
The Library 📖 at the Business Witch Academy is a reader-supported publication. Knowledge is my product. Like you, I have bills to pay and loved ones to care for. If you ever have, or would, pay a college or university for sharing knowledge with you, and you find value in my writing, please consider a paid subscription so that I can continue with my work.
Reporting a Bug to Canva from Within the Design
To report a bug from within your Canva design, you’ll navigate to File > Suggest an Improvement > Click “Report a Bug” from the pop-up screen.
When reporting a bug, provide as much detail as possible about each action you took leading up to your encounter with the bug. A step-by-step approach matters. Your message should look something like, “I clicked here and did this, then I clicked here and did this, and then I clicked here and I expected xyz, but instead, abc happened.”
The Report a Bug screen also allows you to upload screenshots and video. If you can video record your screen (Open a Zoom meeting, screenshare and hit record - if you don’t know other ways) and recreate the issue, this will be immensely helpful to the developers and means the bug will be fixed much, much faster.
Option 2: Suggesting Improvements From Your Canva Dashboard
You can also suggest improvements and report bugs to Canva from your dashboard interface.
To do this, click on your profile in the upper right corner of the window and select “Suggest an Improvement”
All the steps after that are the same as if you were in a design. Select “Improve” or “Bug”, describe the situation, upload screenshots, submit.
There you have it folks. You can provide feedback to Canva, quickly and easily. It is worth the time and effort to help create a better product. They do listen to the feedback and dedicated to continuously improving their software.
